About the job
Our client is a premier, independent game development team known for crafting critically acclaimed, immersive gaming experiences. Operating with creative freedom alongside a global parent publisher, their mission centers on building high-impact, pioneering titles. Their studio environment is driven by mutual trust, open communication, team accountability, and creative execution.
In this role, you will work closely with technical leadership to integrate core gameplay frameworks with reliable, scalable online infrastructure and services.
Key Benefits & Culture
• Guided Strategic Direction: Collaborate with proven industry veterans who bring clear, long-term focus to game development.
• Supportive Environment: Work alongside a skilled collective of developers who value shared growth and technical craft.
• High Operational Autonomy: Take genuine ownership of major systems in an environment free from micro-management.
• Sustainable Pace: We prioritize balanced production schedules, avoiding unsustainable hiring spikes or sudden downsizings.
Core Duties
- Technical ownership and ongoing maintenance of game-to-cloud server integrations built within Unreal Engine.
- Implementation and refinement of networked platform SDKs, leveraging modern Web/API standards and strongly-typed scripts.
- Development of online multiplayer services, including:
- Hybrid lobby setups (managing dedicated cloud servers alongside direct host/P2P connections).
- Data persistence pipelines for player account profiles, unlocked items, and progression tracks.
- Live-ops gameplay features such as player metrics, inventory databases, and timed operational events.
- Collaboration with interface engineers to ensure smooth synchronization between online microservices and player HUD/menus.
- Technical alignment with systems designers to map out data schema, server payload structures, and cloud logic.
- Diagnostic troubleshooting across the complete stack, resolving performance bottlenecks between client builds and remote services.
- Creation of clear technical documentation covering server workflows, network logic, and subsystem architectures.
Required Experience
- 8+ years working professionally in online backends or networked software architecture.
- Advanced mastery of Unreal Engine architecture (UE5 familiarity ideal).
- Expert-level proficiency in C++ programming within real-time game engine environments.
- Hands-on background with cloud multiplayer frameworks (e.g., PlayFab, Pragma, or custom backend stacks).
- Proven familiarity with web development tools and server environments (Node.js, TypeScript, RESTful/OpenAPI interfaces).
- Demonstrated success deploying online features directly to live games (e.g., matchmaking queues, inventory tracking, persistent stats).
- Strong interpersonal skills: Highly self-directed, articulate, and skilled at working within cross-disciplinary teams.
